Pebbles of Hope

Grasping

Up to the heavens,

Like my own tower of babel.

Reaching

For the clouds,

Which birds and angels sit on.

Scrapping

The sky creating

Rifts in its ocean.

Growing

In size and shape

Becoming evermore precarious.

Wishing

To be noticed as

More than lifeless stone.

Marking

My own place in

The world and cosmos.

Becoming

Something greater than one pebble,

But many stones and boulders.

Inspiring

All who see me

To create more beauty like me.

Words from the Author
Ethan Chu

This was poem was written off the October 2020 image for Rattles Ekphrastic Poetry challenge. The image was contributed by Christopher Whitney. The format of the ‘-ing’ words and indented descriptions is made out to set an image that these italicized words are written on the rocks, like those you can buy in stores. The indented parts are the meanings behind each of these words.

Revision Decision

‘Angel’ was added in line 6 to give a more mystical method. ‘As’ was added in line 14 for grammatical corrections. Otherwise the poem was kept simple and stanzas short like the stone are portrayed in the picture (simple grey and small).
