The Trees

There’s nothing more beautiful than a tree.

They stand tall and proud no matter the season.
They flow and glide with the breeze.

They sway and bend without any reason.
They house the birds and their nest.

They hold the world together with their roots.
They keep birds safe and high so they may rest.

Every year they have new recruits.

They reach high above to the heavens
as beautiful as Aphrodite.

They protect and guard without any weapons.
They shall forever be mighty.

They come in all sorts of sizes.
They shall forever be free.
They all have their own guises.

There’s nothing more beautiful than a tree

Words from the Author – David Shukait

I don’t know how to put why I like trees into words. I just have always loved them. This poem I put a lot of thought and time into and I am very proud with the results. when I was a young kid I always loved to climb trees. I’ve always loved nature and my love for it has only flourished over time.

Revision Decision:

I revised almost everything and changed it completely to work more smoothly together. It flows together almost like branches in the wind. Which is what I was going for. This way it’s easy to understand and read but also helps you get a feel for the poem. I had to scrap the entire poem and rebuild it from the beginning multiple times just to get it right.

Summer Nights

Sunsets —

A symphony of color
that sings the world
to sleep.

The mellow warmth.
The graceful breeze.
The buzz of the bees.
The sway of the trees.

Oh,
I love the summer memories.

Of screaming songs at the top of our lungs – windows rolled down;
long walks around our town;
talking nonsense ’til the sun goes down.

The thought of summer
is enchanting enough
to make the butterflies
in my stomach sing.

I know summer will turn to autumn,
who turns to winter,
who turns into spring,
but then, once more,
the summer nights
will begin to sing.

I love those summer nights.

Words from the Author – Jerzey Mandoka
There is nothing better to me than watching the sun down down on a warm summer night. These are the moments I live for and the ones that I love more than anything else.

Revision Decision:
I decided to focus on the words I chose to describe summer nights. Words like “mellow,” “graceful,” “buzz,” and “sway” captured the feelings and emotions I have on those summer nights.
